Party Time for Bowlers

It was party time for thirty-five members and friends of the Lea Short Mat Bowling Club as they met at Ross Conservative Club for their annual Christmas Dinner 2006.

After an excellent meal followed by hot mince pies and coffee, all the guests settled down to wrestle with a list of Christmas conundrums, and a Christmas quiz that was won by Janet Harris and Andy Besley. After this Ceri Watkins led a musical quiz as Don Dickenson performed on the keyboard, much to the confusion and amusement of everyone present. Vera Dickenson won this competition and Sally Zimmermann obtained a consolation prize. Jack Smith, Lea Club Secretary, thanked the staff at the Conservative Club for their superb efforts, and presented them with a gift from Lea SMBC as a token of appreciation. The evening finished with a few carols and songs around the keyboard.

Bowl a Mile

On 15th July 2006 two players from Lea Short Mat Bowling Club joined thousands of people all over the UK taking in the recent Sports Relief Mile Appeal, devising a unique way of achieving their target mile.

Andy Besley and Don Dickenson, completed the distance, each walking one mile and four hundred yards in just over two hours, while bowling one hundred and four, two wood ends, in continuous play, using two mats of fifteen yard lengths.

Other members of the club partnered Andy and Don for ten ends each. Each player received a certificate of participation and Don and Andy received certificates and red socks.

The club raised £510 for Sport Relief, to help needy children all over the world.
